HĀLAU
The Foundation. Hālau Hula Nā Lama I Ka Uluwehi O Laka is a school of traditional hula committed to safeguarding the hula and oli traditions of Kumu Hula Rolanda Mohala Reese, Mae Kamāmalu Klein, and Maiki Aiu Lake. We cultivate a nurturing environment of growth and transformation where cultural knowledge is shared and lived through dedicated practice, connection, and reciprocity.
Our Mission
To perpetuate the foundational traditions of our lineage through a lived discipline of practice that cultivates kūpaʻa (steadfastness), 'onipaʻa (resilience), and haʻahaʻa (humility) in every haumāna.
Our Name
Nā Lama I Ka Uluwehi O Laka, translates to "the lama grove amidst the lush and beautiful verdure of Laka" representing our core identity.
In Hawaiian mo'olelo, Laka is the essence of hula and the spirit of the forest, embodied in the form of mist and the water cycle that nourishes the land. Lama signifies "light" and carries the figurative meaning of knowledge and enlightenment. A sacred piece of lama wood was placed on the hālau altar to inspire dancers and breathe life into their movements.
Our Philosophy
Through protocol, hula and oli, and mālama 'āina, we believe cultural values become internalized. We root our haumāna in three core pillars:
-
Lineage: Carrying forward the honored traditions and wisdom of our kumu and kūpuna.
-
Protocol: Cultivating reverence and respect for hula through cherished customs and traditions.
-
Stewardship: Engaging in the physical restoration and reciprocity of Waikalua Loko—transforming collective labor into spiritual and technical fortitude.
